Causes & Symptoms of TMD

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located just in front of your ears. This joint is able to rotate, move backwards and forwards, and side to side. It lets you chew, yawn, speak and swallow.

The most common cause of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a bad bite (the misalignment of the teeth and or jaw).

However TMD may also be caused by other factors, including injuries or joint diseases like arthritis, bruxism (jaw clenching and teeth grinding) or neck muscle tension, all of which can make symptoms worse.

Following testing and diagnosis, your dentist can create a plan to treat the underlying causes of your TMD.

In some cases, wearing a mouth guard at night to help your jaw joints and muscles relax while you are sleeping can relieve symptoms.

If your TMD is caused by a bad bite, your dentist may be able to realign the teeth without surgery. These adjustments may help lessen any headaches, pain or dizziness you may be experiencing.

Symptoms of TMD can include:

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw or temporomandibular joints (in and around the ear, the jaw joint or the muscles in your jaw face or temples.)
  • A clicking, grinding, popping or crunching noise when you chew, talk, yawn or open your mouth
  • Severe headache, dizziness, or neck pain
  • Difficulties chewing
  • Locking of the joint

If you have any of these symptoms of TMD, talk to your doctor and your dentist.
